Optimizing Extraction of Phenolics and Flavonoids from Solanum ferox Fruit

Abstract: Various phenolic and flavonoid compounds that are secondary plant metabolites are known to contribute to physiological wellbeing. Extraction efficiency of such compounds from plant sources is dependent on the extraction solvent type and composition, and its pH. In this study, different extraction variables were examined: heating time (20 to 180 min), temperature (60˚C, 75˚C and 90˚C) and pH (2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0). Hot water was used in the extraction of dry samples. For phenolics, the most efficient… Show more

“…The total PPN content in the M. citrifolia extract was determined by using Folin–Ciocalteu method ( Ab Rahman et al, 2019 ) with modification using gallic acid as the standard. Each 0.5 mL sample added 0.5 mL distilled water and one mL of Folin–Ciocalteu reagent, stood for 5 min.…”

“…Most of the previous studies were on agronomy, phytochemicals, nutrient composition, downstream application, and postharvest management of the crops (Razili et al, 2013;Shariah et al, 2013;Rahman et al, 2019). To date, there are no records of insects associated with the S. lasiocarpum due to limited study for pests and beneficial insects for this indigenous species.…”
