Optimizing Health and Athletic Performance for Women

Abstract: Purpose of Review The exponential growth of women participating in competitive sports throughout the years was made possible through several initiatives by the International Olympic Committee and the passage and implementation of Title IX as a federal law in the United States. However, this positive trend towards gender equity in sports has not transpired for women in medicine, especially in fields that care for elite athletes. This current review will discuss specific areas that can be tailored … Show more

“…The literature helps this analysis because it indicates LTAD as a model capable of reducing drop out and guaranteeing a sports experience that protects the young athlete health (Lloyd et al, 2016;De Borja et al, 2022;Moeskops et al, 2022;Jayanthi et al, 2022).…”

“…The effect of MC or HC on objective performance measurements remains controversial (Borja et al, 2022). Many reasons have been discussed elsewhere: i/the MC effect that accounts for trivial changes only (Mcnulty et al, 2020); ii/the limits of testing single points during the cycle rather than the entire cycle iii/the limits of relying on menstrual calendar declaration only (Hirschberg, 2022); iv/the laboratory testing not reflecting the multiparametric trait of performance (Meignié et al, 2021); v/the difficulty to control for potential confounders (e.g., training load, season, recovery, etc.,).…”

“…Performance in the field context is of great relevance when monitoring elite athletes. Different performance-related parameters are affected during MC, even though the magnitude and the direction of such effects remain unclear (Mcnulty et al, 2020;Meignié et al, 2021;Borja et al, 2022). In addition, most studies have investigated eumenorrheic naturally cycling athletes in a laboratory setting, excluding athletes with irregular cycles or using contraceptive hormones (Meignié et al, 2021), which may not properly document field reality (Martin et al, 2018;Ravi et al, 2021).…”

“…Outro dado que chama a atenção é que apesar do aumento das mulheres atletas, não tem aumentado o número de mulheres na medicina esportiva. Assim, ainda há muito a desenvolver nessa área, em relação à saúde física, aos desgastes da prática esportiva e à prevenção de assédio sexual perpetrado por treinadores e médicos (BORJA et al, 2022). Isso também evidencia que às mulheres precisam ser garantidas todas as possibilidades, não só no esporte ou na medicina esportiva.…”
