Optimizing the operation of the Haifa-A water-distribution network

Abstract: Haifa-A is the first of two case studies relating to the POWADIMA research project. It comprises about 20% of the city's water-distribution network and serves a population of some 60,000 from two sources. The hydraulic simulation model of the network has 126 pipes, 112 nodes, 9 storage tanks, 1 operating valve and 17 pumps in 5 discrete pumping stations. The complex energy tariff structure changes with hours of the day and days of the year. For a dynamically rolling operational horizon of 24 h ahead, the real-… Show more

“…While both were anticipated at the model formulation stage, the complexities they induced were not known until later. However, all of these issues have, of necessity, been addressed when applying the control system developed to the two case studies (see Salomons et al 2007;Martinez et al 2007). …”

“…x c x c c P (13) where c0 … c9 are the coefficients of the objective function depending on the parameters a, b, α, β, r0, q0, and L as shown in [38]. The minimum of the objective Equation (13) is evaluated using an interpolation numerical method, based on a searching algorithm with an accelerated step coupled with square interpolation (modified Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shann general method) [39], which were implemented in a computer program.…”

“…In most cases, optimisation of operations has only considered fixed speed pumps and the cost savings that may be obtained by exploiting a multi-pattern electric tariff [11][12][13][14][15]. Pump and motor upgrades to more efficient solutions, either being technologically more advanced or because they are more properly adjusted to the system, often allow significant energy savings [2].…”

“…Evolutionary algorithms are the most generic search methods and they work efficiently if a simulator of the considered system is available. The simulator can be called tens of thousands of times during the search and in order to reduce the calculation time simplified simulation models are employed, such approach was used for instance by Salomons et al (2007) and is used by Darwin Scheduler from Bentley Systems (2014). The approach presented by Derceto Aquadapt from Derceto (2014) relies on preparing a highly specialised model of the considered system which is solved using linear and non-linear programming combined with advanced heuristics, the technical details about the algorithm are not available in the literature.…”
