Dramatic forest dynamics strongly influence pressure mitigation from the increasing population and climate changes of an urban landscape. Effectively monitoring landscapes in a spatiotemporally consistent manner, satellite remote sensing has emerged as the first analytical tool to help us understand the changes in urban forests. At present, most studies focus on classification algorithms, spatial analysis methods, and ecosystem models, and the literature lacks spatiotemporally explicit research on the responses of different types of forests to urbanization. Thus, in this study, Hangzhou was selected as a typical metropolitan area to determine the annual spatial patterns of urban forests at a forest-type level. To illustrate the spatial pattern dynamics of different forest types resulting from rapid urbanization, this study characterized the Landsat-based spatial patterns of different forest types, as well as their annual changes from 2000 to 2022 using object-based backdating classification, land-use transfer matrix, area-weighted centroids, and landscape pattern indexes. The spatiotemporal effects of impervious surface expansion on forest pattern changes at a type scale were discussed. The results demonstrated that forests, mainly located in the southwest, decreased from 11,660.69 to 11,516.15 km2. Moreover, evergreen broadleaved forests occupied the largest area and had the most decreased ratio among the three forest types over 23 years, followed by evergreen needle-leaved and deciduous broadleaved forests. In total, 103.37 km2 of forest areas transformed to impervious surfaces, with the highest annual transformation of area occurring among evergreen broadleaved forests widely across Hangzhou City and the lowest occurring among deciduous broadleaved forests. Forests lost adjacency due to the development of Hangzhou City, while this southwestward shrinkage slowed down over 23 years, resulting in the highest increase in the degree of evergreen broadleaved forest fragmentation. Therefore, measures of city planning according to the deep effects of adjustments of administrative divisions to forest suitability should be implemented, such as green ecological corridor construction. This research provides a Landsat-based methodology at a spatiotemporally explicit-scale perspective for better understanding forest changes under high-speed urbanization.

As a crucial government strategy for spatial management and resource allocation, administrative division adjustment (ADA) provides interesting insights in the investigation of the polycentric urban structure (POLY). Using high-resolution geographic grid population data, this study aims to interpret complex linkages between ADA and POLY. Specifically, this research explores the dynamic evolution of POLY and ADA, investigates the spatiotemporal impact of ADA on POLY based on geographically and temporally weighted regression models and analyzes the differences in socioeconomic driving forces for POLY in cities with and without ADA. The results demonstrate that the value of POLY had a rising trend during the study periods. In terms of spatial pattern, POLY has a higher value in the Eastern region and a lower value in the Western region. The influences of ADA on POLY are also characterized by spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The impact of ADA on POLY has a higher value in Eastern and Western China and a lower value in Central and Northeastern China. In addition, the impacts of socioeconomic factors on POLY between cities with and without ADA differed significantly in Central and Western China while differing insignificantly in Eastern and Northeastern China. To promote the balanced development of administrative institutional structures and urban spatial transformation, ADA should be selectively implemented to facilitate POLY following the level of population, economic and productive development in each region.

The making/remaking of administrative boundary is a long practiced tradition of human beings. The making/remaking of the administrative boundaries of Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa has been a subject of great controversy in the administrative history of Ethiopia. The objective of this study was to investigate boundary making/remaking in Ethiopia focusing on Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa cities from 1974 to 2018. This is important because there were/are unprecedented interests between different groups following the 1991 ethno linguistic administrative boundary making/remaking. Moreover, there is lack of well documented research output regarding boundary making/remaking in Ethiopian cities. A qualitative research approach was employed to meet the objectives of the study. Primary and secondary data were collected through in-depth interview tools and document analysis. Several administrative policy documents enacted between 1907 and 2018 were consulted and meticulously analyzed for this study. It was observed that administrative boundary making/remaking become more frequent after 1991. This phenomenon also holds true for Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa cities where oromia region has an interest on both cities and Somali region on Dire Dawa city. The process and the procedures followed and individuals involved as committee members are not clear. With regard to Dire Dawa, beginning from 1993 the city was responsible to and was directed by the Federal government. These facts suggest that competition over these two cities and boundary making/remaking are still unclear and lack involvement of the wider residents of these cities. It is therefore suggested that the participation of concerned communities in any decision making pertaining to boundary making/remaking and other similar issues is indispensible.
