Optimum Coordination of Overcurrent Relay Timing Using Simplex Method

Abstract: This article presents the simplex method for optimum time coordination of directional overcurrent relays. The main contribution of this article is the application of the simplex method in spite of the inherent unsuitability of the problem. This is achieved by applying the simplex algorithm to the dual of the problem. Furthermore, there are reductions in the number of calculations and memory requirement, as the artificial variables need not be introduced. A comparison with other variants of the simplex algorith… Show more

“…During optimal coordination, some or all of these adjustments may be considered as optimization variables to be determined by solving the optimization problem. Three distinct ideas can be realized in the literature regarding selection of optimization variables: linear programming problem, which can be solved easily and exactly by some versions of the simplex method, regarding that all the problem constraints are valid type [9,30]. 2 Some other references have considered the TDS and I s of the relays as the optimization variables and left the TCC of the relays to be fixed prior to optimization process [6,[31][32][33][34][35][36].…”

“…Several liner programming techniques have been introduced in order to solve coordination problem such as Two-Phase Simplex, Big-M (penalty), Dual simplex, Simplex and interval linear programming methods [14][15][16][17][18]. Due to low number of constrains in LP techniques, intelligence based optimization techniques are utilized to solve the problem [19].…”
