Optimum Operating Room Environment for the Prevention of Surgical Site Infections

Abstract: Systematic protocols exist for optimizing the surgical sterility of the operating room to prevent SSIs. Ongoing research efforts aim to improve the precision of peri-operative antisepsis measures and personalize these measures to tailor the patient's unique microbial environment.

“…Throughout the literature, SSIs were associated with factors including advanced age, malnutrition, metabolic diseases, smoking, obesity, hypoxia, and immune-suppression. Moreover, factors like application of skin antiseptics, preoperative shaving, antibiotic prophylaxis, preoperative skin preparation, inadequate sterilization of instruments, surgical drains, surgical hand scrubs, and dressing techniques were among the most frequently reported risk factors [11] [12]. The most critical issue in preventing surgical site infections is the entire and absolute compliance of health professionals with the recommendations in the guidelines [13] [14].…”

“…Intraoperative wound protectors in abdominal surgery are employed to protect the wound edges from bacterial contamination and to minimize mechanical trauma. Several clinical trials have been performed to investigate their role in preventing SSIs with some success [132][133][134] . Plastic adhesive skin barriers used to prevent contamination are popular with some surgeons, but current data show no real impact on the rate of SSIs in general surgery [135] .…”
