OPTN/SRTR 2017 Annual Data Report: Heart

Abstract: In 2017, 3273 heart transplants were performed in the United States. New listings continued to increase, and 3769 new adults were listed for heart transplant in 2017. Over the past decade, posttransplant mortality has declined. The number of new pediatric listings increased over the past decade, as did the number of pediatric heart transplants, although some fluctuation has occurred more recently. New listings for pediatric heart transplants increased from 481 in 2007 to 623 in 2017. The number of pediatric he… Show more

“…Currently, body size and blood group are not considered explicit criterion within the revised heart allocation system, even though these factors are known to impact wait time and rates of transplantation. An analysis of more than 25 000 HT listed patients from the UNOS database by Weiss et al demonstrated that patients with a BMI ≥30 kg/m 2 are likely to spend twice as long on the transplant WL as normal‐weight patients.…”

“…Covariates included in the models were age, sex, eGFR, BMI, and blood group. A stratified analysis by blood group (O blood group vs other blood groups) and BMI (<30 vs ≥30 kg/m 2 , cutoff chosen based on prior literature) was performed. Additionally, the corresponding cumulative incidence function curves were generated .…”

“…These findings are similar to national data on the cumulative incidence of death in heart and lung transplant recipients, which increases over time in the 5‐year post‐transplant period. Based on the primary cause of death reported by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network follow‐ups, infection is the second most common cause of death after graft failure …”

“…Cardiac transplantation remains the gold standard therapy for a small number of highly selected patients with symptomatic end‐stage heart failure . In 2017, 3529 new candidates were listed for heart transplantation in the USA but only 2841 patients were transplanted . Approximately 27% of all patients listed for transplantation will either die or become inactive on the transplant list at 2 y .…”
