Oral health knowledge and practice of elementary school students in school dental clinics

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of oral health education conducted by a dental hygienist in order to provide some information on intensive oral health education to elementary school students.Methods : Subjects were the students of J and M elementary schools in Seoul from October 28 to November 16, 2011. Oral health education was provided by a dental hygienist, and then they took the PHP test again to verify the effect of the oral health education. Results : Concerning changes in PHP scores after the oral health education, the scores of the students dropped from 2.34 in the pretest to 1.85 in the posttest(p<.001). As to changes in PHP scores by grade after the oral health education, the third graders and sixth graders got 2.40 and 1.36, respectively. Regarding satisfaction level with the oral health education, they got 4.07 out of five points. Among the items of satisfaction with the oral health education by grade, there were significant gaps in a change of toothbrushing method(p<.001) and a change of dietary control(p<.001) by grade.Conclusions : The finding of the study showed that both the third and sixth graders had less score in the PHP test and credibility to the effectiveness of the oral health education by the dental hygienist.

Effect of continuing dental care program by elementary school dental clinic in Gimcheon

Objectives:The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of continuing dental care program by elementary school dental clinic in Gimcheon from 2008 to 2013. Methods: The subjects were experimental group of 152 students from three elementary schools having dental clinics and control group of 136 students from three elementary schools of no dental clinics. The six dentists in Gimcheon community health center carried out the regular dental checkups in the elementary schools and four dental hygienists recorded the dental examination results. After receiving WHO dental survey guideline education, the examiners used dental mirror and dental probe under the natural light. The contents of the survey included dental caries in the deciduous and permanent teeth, malocclusion, remaining ratio of sealant, treatment, and follow up. Results: DFT index by grade showed that 3.71 in experimental group and 4.56 in control group and it was remarkable in the 3rd grade. Thus. DFT index in the experimental group was lower than that of control group (p<0.05). DT index by grade was 0.63 in experimental group and 1.28 in control group marked in the 6th grade. DT index in the control group was higher than that of the experimental group (p<0,001). DFT index and DMFT Index by grade showed no significant difference between the control group and the experimental group. DFT and DMFT Index of the control group in the 3rd and 6th grade were lower score than those of experimental group. DFT and DMFT index in the third and 6th grade showed no significant difference between the control group and the experimental group. The remaining ratio of the sealant was 4.89 experimental group in the 6th grade. The remaining ratio of the sealant in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group. Conclusions: The continuing dental care program in the elementary school is very effective method in the treatment of oral disease in the elementary school children. The oral health care and prevention for the elementary school children should be implemented and carried out continuously.

Oral health-related behaviors of some elementary school students by installation of toothbrushing facility

Objectives:The purpose of the study was to investigate oral health-related behaviors of some elementary school students by installation of toothbrushing facility. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed, out by 377 elementary school students with toothbrushing facility, and by 260 elementary school students with no toothbrushing facility in M city from November to December, 2015. The data were analyzed by χ 2 -test, t-test and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. The questionnaire comprised toothbrushing practice(2 items), satisfaction of toothbrushing facility(1 item), oral health knowledge(4 items), fluoride recognition(1 item), and necessity of fluoride mouthrinse(1 item). Results: The level of oral health knowledge was high in toothbrushing facility school. But toothbrushing practice was higher in school of no toothbrushing facility(63.8%) than the school with toothbrushing facility(49.1%)(p<0.001). The number of brushing times a week was also higher in school of no toothbrushing facility(1.98 times) than the toothbrushing facility school(1.59 times)(p=0.011). The dominant reason for no brushing was not recognition(65.8%) in toothbrushing facility school, lack of places(61.3%) in non toothbrushing facility school. Conclusions: In order to improve the oral health in elementary school students, it is necessary to provide toothbrushing education and toothbrushing facility in elementary schools.
