Orbital evolution and search for eccentricity and apsidal motion in the eclipsing HMXB 4U 1700−37

Abstract: In the absence of detectable pulsations in the eclipsing High Mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-37, the orbital period decay is necessarily determined from the eclipse timing measurements. We have used the earlier reported mid-eclipse time measurements of 4U 1700-37 together with the new measurements from long term light curves obtained with the all sky monitors RXTE-ASM, Swift-BAT and MAXI-GSC, as well as observations with RXTE-PCA, to measure the long term orbital evolution of the binary. The orbital period decay ra… Show more

“…The BAT all sky monitor (ASM) lightcurve between 57000-58500 MJD has been barycenter corrected using the earth2sun package available in HEASOFT. Using the ftool efsearch on it, the orbital period is found to be 294764.55 ± 68.78 s (∼3.411627 days), which is consistent with the result published earlier (Islam & Paul 2016). For NuSTAR and XRT data barycorr has been used to apply the barycentric correction and for LAXPC data the standard ASTROSAT tool as1bary has been used for the same.…”

“…The extreme 07 f star HD 153919 is a confirmed optical counterpart (Penny et al 1973;Hutchings et al 1973;Dolan et al 1980), of which an orbital eccentricity of 0.22±0.04 and a radial velocity semi-amplitude of 20.6±1.0 km s −1 have been measured (Hammerschlag-Hensberge et al 2003). The binary parameters of the 4U 1700-37 System are tabulated in Seifina et al (2016) and Islam & Paul (2016).…”

“…Apsidal advance has also been detected in the transient X-ray binary 4U 0115+63 using pulse timing (Raichur and Paul 2010b). In the absence of pulsations, eclipse measurements have been used in 4U 1700-37 (Islam and Paul 2016), the rate of evolution of which was earlier overestimated as the effect of intrinsic rapid intensity variation of the source during the eclipse transitions was not taken into account. With the exception of Cyg X-3, the orbital periods of the HMXBs are found to decay.…”
