“…Its presence in the Mediterranean has been confirmed mainly in waters along the Spanish (Cervera et al, 2004) and French coasts (e.g. Thibaut, 2001), Maltese Islands (Sammut & Perrone, 1998) and in waters off western Italy (Trinchese, 1893;Schmekel & Portmann, 1982), while we were not able to find any reliable records from the eastern Mediterranean. This is the first documented record of this species in the Gulf of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea.…”

“…Cerata are pointed and spindle-shaped. The diagnostic features fit the description of Schmekel & Portmann (1982). The specimen was photographed under an Olympus SZX16 stereomicroscope and is now housed in the opisthobranch collection of the Marine Biology Station in Piran under collection number MBP 101.…”

“…The teeth are all smooth in most specimens, and always look like that when viewed dorsally or from the outer face (e.g., Alder & Hancock 1855;Bergh 1904;Eliot 1906 -for J. flagellatus), but some individuals possess a series of small denticles on the inside which is only visible when the tooth is viewed from the inner face (e.g., Eliot 1906;Pruvot-Fol 1954). What we cannot explain at present, as intraspecific variation, is the account by Schmekel & Portmann (1982) of a denticulate rachidian and 4 to 10 (though their illustration shows 16 and 13) strong denticles on all of the laterals from Mediterranean specimens.…”

“…In fact the penis Fig. 11 Opposite lana/us hyalin us: (A) radula (Leigh specimen), selected lateral teeth (numbered), I from row 12, 6 from row 2 (dorsolateral view to emphasise the dentic1es), and 17-19 from row 3; (8) of J. hyalinus is very long and narrow (Schmekel 1970;Schmekel & Portmann 1982;present observations), just like that described by Eliot for J. flagellatus. We are not the first to propose the synonymy of J. flagellatus under J. hyalin us; Pruvot-Fol suggested it in 1954 (on p. 374) as did Gosliner in 1981 (on p. 30).…”
