Organisational capabilities for internal complexity: an exploration in the Coop stores

Abstract: Purpose – Managing organizations in complex environments is a major challenge. Complexity is not only due to the external environment (market and/or technological turbulence) but also to the internal configuration and specificities. A recent stream of studies in organizational literature suggested that organizations should develop and deploy specific capabilities for facing complexity, namely dynamic capabilities. This means becoming more flexible. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/app… Show more

“…involved. An open innovation approach (Chesbrough, 2003) can mitigate many of these problems by constructing knowledge and capabilities (De Toni et al , 2016) and building new relationships, thus having an indirect effect on the survival chances of the new venture (Eftekhari and Bogers, 2015). In this sense, the open environment offered by an accelerator can facilitate many practices that directly benefit start-ups in their early phases of development.…”

“…Case studies are widely adopted by scholars to build a theory or when they are conducting preliminary investigations on any new phenomenon (Mehman and Teuteberg, 2016; De Toni et al , 2016). Case studies are an appropriate method when the purpose is to investigate a contemporary phenomenon using two primary sources of evidence, i.e.…”

“…Case study research is “an approved method when addressing the questions of why and how” (Mehmann and Teuteberg, 2016, p. 883). Case studies are widely adopted by scholars to build theory or when they are conducting preliminary investigations on any new phenomenon (De Toni et al , 2016; Mehmann and Teuteberg, 2016; Rinaldi et al , 2015). The case study design allows us to better reflect the richness and complexity of the contextual conditions investigated, and to overcome the scarcity of available information.…”
