Organization and Development of Bone Marrow Donation and Transplantation in Poland

Abstract: This paper describes bone marrow donation and transplantation in Poland in terms of its history, current state, and information on the quality control system. Based on data gathered from the informatics systems of the Polish Central Unrelated Potential Bone Marrow Donor and Cord Blood Registry and the Polish transplant registries, as well as World Marrow Donor Association statistics, we performed an overview study to collect and compare numbers on hematopoietic stem cells donations and transplantations in Pola… Show more

“…This fact constitutes one of the reasons why the CBMDR Poltransplant is internationally considered to be a well-organized haematopoietic stem cell donor registry with a large, high-quality donor database, and also, more and more Poles eventually become actual donors for their compatriots as well as for patients from other countries. 14,15 Increasing the number of people signing up as potential donors has critical meaning, mainly because of the fact that the chance of encountering an adequate donor for a particular patient is only 1 in 20,000. This indicates that the overwhelming majority of people that declared the willingness to donate bone marrow cells and had their samples taken to create their genetic profile will never become a real donor.…”

“…Since 2010 Polish unrelated donor database expanded and registry reached over 1 000 000 unrelated hematopoietic donors which placed it at sixth place among bone marrow providers worldwide in 2015 . The increased number of available donors and demand led to increased number of donations—1084 have been made including 186 bone marrow harvests in 2015 .…”

“…Another consequence of the Polish registry growth is the increasing number of donations from Polish donors for international patients. Between 2010 and 2014, the percent of donations for non-national patients increased from 33% to 76%, placing Poland in 6th place in the ranking of the HSC "exporters" worldwide [69].…”
