Organometallic complexes with biological molecules. IX. Diorgano- and triorgano-tin(IV)[meso-tetra (4-sulfonatophenyl)porphinate] derivatives: solid-state and solution-phase structural aspects andin vivo effects

pyrazoline {where X = H (a); CH 3 (b); OCH 3 (c); Cl (d) and R = Me, Pr n and Ph}] have been synthesized by the reaction of R 2 SnCl 2 with sodium salt of pyrazolines in 1 : 2 molar ratio, in anhydrous benzene. These newly synthesized derivatives have been characterized by elemental analysis (C, H, N, Cl and Sn), molecular weight measurement as well as spectral [IR and multinuclear NMR ( 1 H, 13 C and 119 Sn)] studies. The bidentate behaviour of the pyrazoline ligands was confirmed by IR, 1 H and 13 C NMR spectral data. A distorted trans-octahedral structure around tin(IV) atom for R 2 Sn(C 15 H 12 N 2 OX) 2 has been suggested. The free pyrazoline and diorganotin(IV) dipyrazolinates have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Some diorganotin(IV) dipyrazolinates exhibit higher antibacterial and antifungal effect than free ligand and some of the antibiotics.

The molecular geometry, energetics and electronic charge distribution of diorgano-and triorgano-tin(IV) complexes of [protoporphyrin-IX] and [meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine] derivatives were determined at semi-empirical and ab initio levels. To study the molecular details of the complexes, simpler molecule models were calculated by the ab initio pseudo-potential method. The molecular properties of these complexes are essentially independent of the presence of the peripheral tin atoms. Agreement was always found among the results of the different computational approaches, as well as between the theoretical and the experimental findings on the molecular geometry of the hypothesized complexes. Interaction modes between water and the organo-tin systems considered were affected strongly by the presence of peripheral tin atoms.

5,10,15,20‐Tetrakis[4‐(triorganostannyloxy)phenyl]porphyrins, (R3SnO)4TPP [2, R = Cy (a), Ph (b), PhC(CH3)2CH2 (c)], have been synthesized by the condensation of 4‐(triorganostannyloxy)benzaldehyde, 4‐(R3SnO)C6H4CHO (1), with pyrrole in the presence of BF3 followed by oxidation by p‐chloranil and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, UV–visible and NMR (1H, 13C and 119Sn) spectra. The results of X‐ray single‐crystal diffraction show that 1a and 1b possess a trans‐C3SnO2 trigonal bipyramidal geometry with the axial positions occupied by the phenolate oxygen and formyl group oxygen of an adjacent molecule and form a one‐dimensional zigzag chain. In 2a, the macrocyclic core of the porphyrin is coplanar and each tin atom possesses a distorted tetrahedral geometry. These compounds (1 and 2) have potent in vitro cytotoxic activity against two human tumor cell lines – CoLo205 and MCF‐7 – and the activity decreases in the order Ph > Cy > PhC(CH3)2CH2 for the R group bound to tin.
