To investigate the characteristics of air pollutants transported from the Asian continental regions to the marine boundary layer of the northern South China Sea (SCS), we recorded the continuous measurements of meteorology, sea surface radiative budget, and ozone (O 3 ) and related compounds in the marine boundary layer near Taiwan during 2010 cruises. For the marine field campaign investigation, the contaminated O 3 and related compounds (e.g., NO 2 , NO, CO, CH 4 , and NMHC) have been eliminated from research vessel's exhaust by using various meteorological factors. The mean values of O 3 and its major precursors (NO 2 , NO, and CO) were 25 ± 9.9, 3.2 ± 1.8, 2.9 ± 1.7, and 204 ± 54 ppb, respectively. A high O 3 mixing ratio is related to extreme shortwave radiation, high air temperature, less precipitation, and low wind speed and specific humidity. The results indicated a higher ∆O 3 /∆CO ratio of 0.2 at sunset during the March 2010 cruise mainly due to a long-range transport of aged plumes (> 3 days) originating from the super-region of Asian continent and a lower ∆O 3 /∆CO ratio of 0.12 at midday, mostly associated with the proximity to local sources of fresh plumes (< 2 days) during April 2010 and July 2010 cruises. The O 3 and related compounds mixing ratios over the ocean are affected by emission source, Asian monsoon, wind speed, gas deposition, gas solubility, the chemical enhancement factor, the frontal inversion and the boundary layer height. A clear bulge in the diurnal cycle was observed between early morning and late afternoon for NO x , CO, and O 3 . Moreover, 5-d backward trajectories and Southeast Asia surface wind fields suggested that the southward export of the air masses in spring originated from Mongolia and the East Asian continent.

In this study, the aerosol optical properties and vertical distributions in major biomass-burning emission area of northern Indochina were investigated using ground-based remote sensing (i.e., four Sun-sky radiometers and one lidar) during the Seven South East Asian Studies/Biomass-burning Aerosols & Stratocumulus Environment: Lifecycles & Interactions Experiment conducted during spring 2014. Despite the high spatial variability of the aerosol optical depth (AOD; which at 500 nm ranged from 0.75 to 1.37 depending on the site), the temporal variation of the daily AOD demonstrated a consistent pattern among the observed sites, suggesting the presence of widespread smoke haze over the region. Smoke particles were characterized as small (Ångström exponent at 440-870 nm of 1.72 and fine mode fraction of 0.96), strongly absorbing (single-scattering albedo at 440 nm of 0.88), mixture of black and brown carbon particles (absorption Ångström exponent at 440-870 nm of 1.5) suspended within the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Smoke plumes driven by the PBL dynamics in the mountainous region reached as high as 5 km above sea level; these plumes subsequently spread out by westerly winds over northern Vietnam, southern China, and the neighboring South China Sea. Moreover, the analysis of diurnal variability of aerosol loading and optical properties as well as vertical profile in relation to PBL development, fire intensity, and aerosol mixing showed that various sites exhibited different variability based on meteorological conditions, fuel type, site elevation, and proximity to biomass-burning sources. These local factors influence the aerosol characteristics in the region and distinguish northern Indochina smoke from other biomass-burning regions in the world.

Abstract. We compare, for the first time, the performance of a simplified atmospheric radiative transfer algorithm package, the Corti-Peter (CP) model, versus the more complex Fu-Liou-Gu (FLG) model, for resolving top-of-theatmosphere radiative forcing characteristics from singlelayer cirrus clouds obtained from the NASA Micro-Pulse Lidar Network database in 2010 and 2011 at Singapore and in Greenbelt, Maryland, USA, in 2012. Specifically, CP simplifies calculation of both clear-sky longwave and shortwave radiation through regression analysis applied to radiative calculations, which contributes significantly to differences between the two. The results of the intercomparison show that differences in annual net top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) cloud radiative forcing can reach 65 %. This is particularly true when land surface temperatures are warmer than 288 K, where the CP regression analysis becomes less accurate. CP proves useful for first-order estimates of TOA cirrus cloud forcing, but may not be suitable for quantitative accuracy, including the absolute sign of cirrus cloud daytime TOA forcing that can readily oscillate around zero globally.
