Original article: Prevalence and cumulative incidence of food hypersensitivity in the first 3 years of life

Abstract: By the age of 3 years, 5-6% of children suffer from FHS based on food challenges and a good clinical history. There were large discrepancies between reported and diagnosed FHS. Comparing our data with a study performed in the USA more than 20 years ago, there were no significant differences in the cumulative incidence of FHS.

“…Four of 20 of children with FHS were reacting to two allergens. Point prevalence of FHS to any foods in children has previously been estimated in population-based cohorts to 1-8% (4,7,21,23). The highest prevalence of FHS in this study was found to be 3.6% at 18 months of age.…”

Recent data from children born in 2001 -2 show no further increases in the prevalence of peanut sensitisation and allergy (6) .In 1998 the UK Government issued precautionary advice to mothers whose children have a family history of allergic diseases, that they may wish to avoid peanut consumption during pregnancy and breast-feeding and avoid giving the child peanuts and peanut products until the child is 3 years of age (7) . The precautionary advice was based on recommendations from the UK Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT), which advises the UK Government.…”
