In a widely used definition, a software ecosystem (SECO) is a "collection of software projects which are developed and evolve together in the same environment." The objective of this article is to explore how SECOs foster collaboration among their key players to achieve innovation within individual software projects. Thus, in this article, we merge two prevalent views from past research, namely, the organization and the project-centric views on innovation management into a concept map. We then describe how these views complement each other. The resulting concept map contains new concepts that provide better coverage of how innovation currently takes place within ecosystems and shows how internal and external drivers are key to the innovation in SECOs. With this article, we want to open the floor to further discussion on how internal and external drivers can be effective in propelling innovation of both traditional (closed) and open-source SECOs. We solicit future work to expand on this view and to achieve a more complete understanding of how SECOs are connected to innovation.

De nombreuses entreprises utilisent des logiciels libres dans leurs propositions commerciales. Il existe de nombreuses études de cas sur leur modèle d'affaires. Cependant, il n'y a pas d'analyse globale structurant différents modèles open-sources. C'est l'objectif de cet article. En nous appuyant sur le cadre des modèles économiques et la littérature en systèmes d'information, nous partons des besoins en offres libres pour proposer une typologie des modèles économiques open-sources. Cela nous permet de discuter le lien entre captation de valeur et ressources clés. Le modèle de l'open-source apparaît basé sur la gestion et le contrôle de la dynamique d'évolution des logiciels (le « logiciel flux »), dans une industrie qui s'était habituée à vendre des produits (« logiciel stock »).

Can the OSS-Focused Education Impact on OSS Implementations in Companies? A Motivational Answer through a Delphi-Based Consensus Study

In the last few decades, the Open Source Software (OSS) diffusion has grown remarkably in companies. In this context, the present study has analyzed the factors that incentivize OSS implementations for enterprise purposes, linking two perspectives: (1) managerial and (2) educational. Thus, the Delphi methodology was applied to a panel of experts with two aims: (1) to know managers’ perceptions about organizational users’ motivations toward OSS after receiving OSS training and (2) to develop a forecasting study to examine the OSS diffusion in the medium term in companies and educational centers. In this context, the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) was the theoretical approach through which we identified the motivational factors. Specifically, three SDT motivations were added: (1) autonomy, (2) competence and (3) relatedness. The 104 selected experts were managers from companies with employees who have studied in educational centers where OSS usage is mandatory. The results show that managers perceive that OSS training incentivizes OSS implementations in companies. At the same time, user motivations are considered to be extremely relevant, especially autonomy. In addition, is the results foresee a similar level of OSS implementation in the business and educational fields in the medium term. Finally, conclusions, practical implications and limitations are discussed.
