Ossicular Reconstruction with Titanium Prosthesis

Abstract: Titanium is a satisfactory material for use in ossicular reconstruction because of its ease of insertion, tissue tolerance, and low rate of extrusion. Caution is advised when selecting candidates for this procedure during revision surgery, especially if the canal wall and stapes superstructure are absent.

“…One or all of these factors can have implications in the use of ossicular prostheses, extrusions and middle ear sound conduction. Similar hearing outcomes have been observed in other studies on type 3 ossicular reconstruction using titanium prostheses [16,20,21].…”

“…As an implant connecting tympanic membrane to the stapes head or footplate, titanium is favored because of its rigidity, light weight and biocompatibility [15]. In addition, titanium TORPs and PORPs require cartilage interposition between the implant headplate and the tympanic membrane/fascia to prevent extrusion [16]. A thin slice of cartilage with or without perichondrium is ordinarily recommended as an interposition graft to cause minimal impedance to hearing [16].…”

“…Its use in reconstruction of the ossicular chain during middle ear surgery has been increasing [7,8]. The use of titanium ossicular prosthesis was first reported by Stupp et al in 1999 [9], and later reports have shown success rates (ABG less than or equal to 20 dB) ranging between 57 and 77% [10][11][12][13][14]. We would like to report our results using titanium middle ear prosthesis.…”
