Osteoid Osteoma Mimicking Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Injury: Diagnosis and Review of Treatment

Abstract: We report the case of osteoid osteoma (OO) with ulnar styloid involvement. A review of the literature has been made with the aim of defining the special behaviour of OO when it is near the articular surface. That behaviour can affect the diagnosis, masking the real etiology of the pain, delaying the diagnosis, missing the diagnosis, or what is more serious, conducting an inadequate treatment. We propose a treatment algorithm conducted based on the localization near or far from articular surface and the superfi… Show more

“…They account for approximately 13% of all osteoid osteomas [6]. The occurrence of OO in uncommon locations presents a diagnostic challenge and usually there is significant time delay between symptom initiation and diagnosis due to the lack of clinical signs and radiographic features that exist in the well-established classical hallmarks of an extra-articular lesion [2–4, 7, 8]. In treating intra-articular OO, no differences have been reported between using open or an arthroscopic approach [6, 9].…”

“…Osteoid osteoma (OO), first described by Jaffe HL, et al in 1935, 1 , 2 , 3 is an uncommon benign bone-forming tumor of the musculoskeletal system with uncertain etiology. 1 , 4 It accounts for 3%–4% of all primary bone tumors, 1 , 5 and 10%–14% of all benign bone tumors. 1 , 6 OO most commonly involves long bones, 2 , 4 , 6 , 7 especially proximal femur and tibia.…”
