Otoplasty for prominent ears

Abstract: A technique for correction of prominent ears is described. It combines the advantages of simplicity and accuracy and provides satisfactory results. Essential points of the technique are perichondrial cartilage scratching at the superior crus and antihelical fold according to Stenström, mattress sutures applied to the perichondrium and soft tissues at the medial surface, and to these we add the trimming of the tail of the helix, thinning of the antitragus, and a double-spindle skin excision at the medial auricu… Show more

“…4 A poorly developed or absent superior crus and body of the antihelix is always observed, complementing an anatomic picture which will define the degree of deformity. Secondary abnormalities requiring repair may be observed in the lobe or helical rim, eventually causing specific types of deformational anomalies, such as the shell ear, 5 lop ear, or crumpled ear 6 which are not in the scope of this study.…”

“…4e22 among otoplasty techniques we can divide them into two groups: the cartilage-incision and the suture-placement procedures. Combined techniques and a large number of surgical techniques or modifications have been explained to improve the cosmetic outcome [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Scoring of the anterior surface of the auricular cartilage is one of the most commonly used procedures in otoplasty, and we believe it is a very safe technique.…”
