Our initial experience with ventriculo-epiplooic shunt in treatment of hydrocephalus in two centers

Abstract: VEp shunt is a new, safe and efficient surgical technique for the treatment of hydrocephalus. VEp shunt is indicated in patients with history of recurrent distal shunt failures, and in patients with history of open abdominal surgery and high risk for developing abdominal complications.

“…Resistance to CSF outflow correlated significantly with improvement (P<0.05). [41] Other markers such as amplitude in CSF pulse pressure, the slope of the amplitude-pressure regression line, or elasticity did not show any correlation with outcome [41] A further differentiation into early stage and advanced stage was made by measuring the compliance [42] CSF LP shunt 55.1 [2] 2 VP shunt 43.2 [2] , 69.8 [46] , 95.2 [47] 3 VA shunt 30.2 [46] 4 Ventriculo-epiplooic shunt [48] 5 ETV 4.8 [46] LP -Lumboperitoneal; VP -Ventriculoperitoneal; VA -Ventriculoartrial; ETV -Endoscopic third ventriculostomy…”

“…Hydrocephalus is an impairment in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) physiological dynamics, which can lead to multiple complications and neurological deficits. 1 During infancy and childhood, hydrocephalus is a prevalent health problem that is frequently encountered by paediatric neurosurgeons. 2 When stratified by age groups, the global prevalence of hydrocephalus is 88/100 000 in the paediatric population.…”
