Our intraoperative boost radiotherapy experience and applications

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONBreast conserving surgery (BCS) and radiotherapy (RT) has been the standard treatment in breast cancer therapy in appropriate cases, as a result of studies and improvements achieved especially within the last 30 years. Due to the high likelihood of recurrence rates if adjuvant RT is not applied, postoperative boost RT is applied to the tumor bed (1-3).Whole breast irradiation (WBI) performed as an adjuvant therapy and again boost RT effectively controls the primary tumor site and the around of 1-2 … Show more

“…As opposed to postoperative boost RT, IOBRT is advantageous because it allows focusing directly on the tumor bed and can be delivered with less but more effective dose without skin toxicity and has also been shown to be superior in terms of cosmetic results and patient comfort. [8,9] The optimal dose of WBI with IORT is being investigated by two ongoing multicenter prospective studies. The initial results of these studies indicate that the 3-week WBI added to IORT during surgery is sufficient and favorable.…”
