Outcome of cognitive-behavioral and support group brief therapies for depressed, HIV-infected persons

Abstract: Brief group therapy for depressed persons with HIV infection produced reductions in symptoms of distress. The two forms of therapy resulted in shared and unique improvements in functioning, although social support groups focused on emotional coping presented greater evidence of clinically significant change. As more persons contract HIV infection and live longer with HIV disease, further research is needed to evaluate outcomes of mental health services with these individuals.

“…These studies have been conducted almost exclusively with gay men. Some of these studies have focused on HIV-positive gay men with depression [1, 2, 3]or a concomitant life stressor, such as HIV serostatus notification [4]or recent AIDS bereavement [5]. Other clinical trials have studied interventions aimed more generally at the stress involved in living with HIV infection [6, 7, 8, 9].…”

“…Our patient sample was heterogeneous, whereas in previous studies most of the patients were homosexual [5, 6, 10, 20, 21, 22, 23]. In our context, heterosexuals and intravenous drug users (IDUs) in particular constitute the main group of all HIV-infected subjects.…”

“…Our patients had all been referred to a consultation-liaison psychiatry department, in contrast to most previous studies [5, 6, 10, 15, 20, 21]in which community announcements or advertisements were used to recruit patients, in order to obtain large participant samples. This type of recruitment produces a selection bias, because people who volunteer to participate in this type of study may have a special motivation and may be more receptive to intervention of any kind.…”
