The basic parameter for evaluating the efficiency of airport operations is capacity. Investment planning in the aviation industry is a complex process, requiring consideration of many factors and a combination of different aspects. The aim of the study is to present the possibility of using discrete event simulation as a tool for determining the capacity of runways at airports. The main research problem of the article is: How to build a simulation model for determining the capacity of an airport runway using FlexSim software? An attempt was made to build simulation model, the purpose of which is to carry out simulation analyzes of airport capacity, and in particular of the runway. Simulation analyzes were performed using the FlexSim 3D Simulation software. The article discusses in detail the operating principle of the model and presents the results of numerical tests carried out to calculate the capacity of runways and taxiways at airports. The constructed simulation model of the airport capacity in the FlexSim environment enables to determine the airport’s runway capacity, constituting valuable information to support modernization decisions. The model may contribute to the efficient adjustment of the runway capacity. It should be noted that the creation of an effective system dedicated to a given airport will improve the air traffic control carried out by the system based on calculated maximum hourly runway capacity.

Ecuador’s credit unions or COACs play a key role inside the local economy, and the pandemic period has shown the weakness of the entities. Understanding the efficiency of the country’s largest COACs and the different factors related to it can provide important information for policymakers and the sector in general. Therefore, our main goal was the evaluation of technical efficiency and the factors that influenced it during the years from 2009 to 2020 which included the pandemic period. For this, the DEA model was applied with production and intermediation focus, and this was applied to 19 COACs from the first segment of the sector. Findings reveal that the level of technical efficiency was larger in the pre-pandemic than the pandemic period. Efficient credit unions were characterized by higher profitability, low levels of liquidity and portfolio coverage, and a high rate of financial intermediation, among others, through the pre-pandemic period; however, debt restructuring was one the most important characteristics of nonefficient Credit Unions. The most important contribution of this study is the possible projection of different decisions that will allow the COACs to improve their role in the system given all the difficulties that the pandemic is causing around the world.

A Decade for the Mathematics: Bibliometric Analysis of Mathematical Modeling in Economics, Ecology, and Environment

Our study commemorates this event by presenting a retrospective of the publications related to the use of mathematical tools for the analysis of economic, ecological, and environmental phenomena. We analyzed 1257 scientific publications using bibliometric techniques to examine the most productive and influential authors and their contributions in the economic, ecological, and environmental fields. Co-authorship among the top authors and countries, co-occurrence of the keywords, bibliographic coupling of the documents and authors, and author co-citation were analyzed by applying network analysis techniques using VOSviewer software, identifying the intellectual structure of the research and the collaborative networks in the fields. The results show that mathematics has grown impressively in terms of publication and citation. The contributions come from all over the world, but the majority are from the People’s Republic of China and Spain. The results also show themes and trends in the economic, environmental, and ecological fields and a predominant use of mathematical tools in optimization processes in order to rigorously substantiate the decisions of investors and policymakers. Thus, our study offers support for any researcher to understand the current state of the art and develop a comprehensive understanding of journal publications.
