Ovarian Steroid Cell Tumour: Correlation of Histopathology with Clinicopathologic Features

Abstract: Ovarian steroid cell tumours (not otherwise specified) are rare neoplasms of the ovary and are classified under lipid cell tumours. Their diagnosis can be considered as one of exclusion. Histopathologically, the tumour should carefully be evaluated for microscopic features of malignancy, but it is essential for the clinician and the pathologist to remember that in these tumours, pathologically benign histomorphology does not exclude the possibility of clinically malignant behaviour. Our case study focuses on t… Show more

“…The review by Hayes and Scully [1] was published in 1987 and, since then, there have been no review articles or large case series on malignant SCTs, only case reports. Therefore, we reviewed the relatively recent literature (published since 1998) concerning malignant SCTs, in order to reevaluate the effectiveness of postsurgical adjuvant therapy and the clinical outcome in each patient [6,9,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16] . The clinicopathological factors, adjuvant therapies used, and outcomes in 12 reported patients, including the case in this study, are described in Table 1 .…”

“…Treatment of these tumours is decided on the basis of the staging, the extra-ovarian spread of the tumour and the desire to preserve fertility [8,9] . Unilateral salpingoophorectomy is the treatment of choice in young patients, as they are desirious of preserving fertility [10] .…”
