Overview of enabling technologies for 3GPP LTE-advanced

Abstract: As the long term evolution (LTE) standard comes to an end, 3rd Generation Partnership Project is discussing further evolution of the LTE to meet the international mobile telecommunications advanced requirements, which is referred to as LTE-Advanced (LTE release 10 and beyond). This article first presents the network infrastructure of the LTE-Advanced, and then provides an in-depth overview of enabling technologies from the physical layer aspects, including carrier aggregation, advanced multiple-input multiple-… Show more

“…The SCCs convey only the dedicated signalling information, PDSCH (physical DL shared channel), PUSCH (physical UL shared channel), and PDCCH (physical DL control channel). Meanwhile, LTE-A supports cross-carrier scheduling which means PDCCH transmitted from a particular CC may contain the scheduling information on other CCs as well as its own CC [23]. That is, the DL control channel of PCC (subject to small interference) can be used in order to schedule DL and UL resource on the SCCs (subject to large interference).…”

“…spectrum) sharing, advanced multiple-input multiple-output techniques, relays and enhanced inter-cell interference coordination are the enabling technologies for 4G and act as the baseline for 5G. The authors in [3] provide an overview for these enabling technologies from the physical layer aspects while [4] explains the possible improvements and the associated challenges for those enabling technologies.…”

“…This precoding technique for the MIMO system can improve the system performance significantly by using the channel state information (CSI) [11][12][13][14] at the transmitter. This system model with limited feedback studied by Love and Heath in [7] has been adopted in many communication systems, such as the Long Term Evolution (LTE) [1][2][3][4] and spatial modulation [15,16]. The CSI at the transmitter should be updated *Correspondence: moonho@jbnu.ac.kr 1 Division of Electronics and Information Engineering, Chonbuk National University, 567 Baekje-daero, deokjin-gu, Jeonju 54896, Korea Full list of author information is available at the end of the article with the channel varying in a time varying channel.…”
