Overview of the EVS codec architecture

Abstract: The recently standardized 3GPP codec for Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) offers new features and improvements for low-delay real-time communication systems. Based on a novel, switched low-delay speech/audio codec, the EVS codec contains various tools for better compression efficiency and higher quality for clean/noisy speech, mixed content and music, including support for wideband, super-wideband and full-band content. The EVS codec operates in a broad range of bitrates, is highly robust against packet loss and … Show more

“…Note that we do not study the newest standardized voice codec, designated Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) [20], since it is not widely deployed at present. Further, AMR was standardized in December 2000 and has been the default codec in 3GPP cellular systems, including Long Term Evolution (LTE), through 2014, when the new EVS codec was standardized [19,21].…”

“…The newest speech codec to be standardized is the Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) codec designed specifically for 4th generation VoLTE but is expected to be deployed in many applications because of its performance and its wide-ranging set of operable modes [40]. The new EVS codec uses the ACELP codec structure and builds on components of the AMR-WB codec.…”

“…There are also improvements in coding of mixed content, voice activity detection, comfort noise generation, low delay coding, and switching between linear prediction and MDCT (modulated discrete cosine transform) coding modes. Further details on the EVS codec can be found in the extensive set of papers cited in [40].…”
