Overview of treatment options for invasive fungal infections

Abstract: The introduction of several new antifungals has significantly expanded both prophylaxis and treatment options for invasive fungal infections (IFIs). Relative to amphotericin B deoxycholate, lipid-based formulations of amphotericin B have significantly reduced the incidence of nephrotoxicity, but at a significant increase in drug acquisition cost. Newer, broad-spectrum triazoles (notably voriconazole and posaconazole) have added significantly to both the prevention and treatment of IFIs, most notably Aspergillu… Show more

“…grew concomitant Mucorales (Table 4). This highlights the pathogenic nature of these other molds and supports the clinical practice of early empirical therapy with both liposomal amphotericin B and voriconazole, as potential copathogenic molds are not uniformly sensitive to amphotericin B (22,23).…”

“…Toxicity associated with 5FC includes hepatitis and myelosuppression, especially at serum concentrations 4100 mg/mL. Polyene antifungals exhibit dose-related nephrotoxicity which is reduced with newer lipid formulations of AmB compared to conventional AmB deoxycholate 2,68 . Polyenes have also been linked with common infusionrelated reactions and less frequently anemia.…”
