Objective: To assess the factors associated with overweight and obesity among women of childbearing age in Brazil. Design: Cross-sectional study Setting: Using the National Health Survey (PNS) database, from the year 2013. The socioeconomic and demographic factors analyzed were age, race/skin color, region, marital status, education level, employment and family income. Concerning health history: diagnoses of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, heart attack, stroke, chronic kidney disease, menarche, parity, and depression were evaluated. For lifestyle information: health status, alcoholic beverage consumption, smoking, and physical activity were included. The outcomes were obesity and overweight. The association of excess weight with socioeconomic-demographic factors, health history, and lifestyle characteristics was investigated according to the appropriate theoretical-conceptual model for the topic. Participants: The sample size was 17,109 women aged 18 to 49 years. Results: The prevalence of women with excess weight was 55.20%, with 33.26% being overweight and 21.94% with obesity. The factors associated with excess weight were: age, non-white skin color, having a partner, family income of up to two minimum wages, menarche before the age of 12, multiparity, diabetes mellitus, depression, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, and heart attack. Conclusion: The results showed an association between excess weight and sociodemographic factors, both determinants of general and reproductive health history. Implementation of effective public health policies is necessary to prevent unfavorable outcomes related to the health of women of childbearing age with excess weight.

A Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 (DM2), é caracterizada pela dificuldade de atuação da insulina produzida pelo pâncreas. O aumento do seu risco está relacionado, principalmente, a hábitos não saudáveis e histórico familiar, que contrastam com o estilo de vida dos universitários, impulsionado pela carga de estudos elevada, estresse e alimentação irregular. Objetivo: Realizar uma análise epidemiológica dos fatores de risco ao desenvolvimento do DM2 em estudantes universitários da UFDPAR, correlacionando hábitos de vida durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Métodos: Estudo transversal quanti-qualitativo, realizado entre setembro de 2020 e junho de 2021 com graduandos da Universidade Federal do Delta do Parnaíba (UFDPar). Resultados: Dos 252 estudantes que participaram da pesquisa, observou-se que o sobrepeso e a obesidade, se fez presente em 25,4% dos alunos, já os sedentários foram maioria com 58,73% casos. Dos fatores de risco não evitáveis, 189 (75%) informaram história familiar de DM2, sendo que 58 (23,01%) em parentes próximos (pais, irmãos ou filhos). Dados que, associados a fatores ambientais, aumentam o risco de adoecimento por doenças crônicas. Com relação aos hábitos de vida durante o período de isolamento, 30% dos alunos passaram a comer mais alimentos industrializados e 58% relataram aumento de peso durante a pandemia, enquanto 32% informaram se alimentar de forma saudável. Conclusão: O sedentarismo, seguido do sobrepeso e alimentação inadequada surgem como os mais importantes fatores de predisposição a DM2 nos próximos 10 anos, agravados no período pandêmico devido aos atravessamentos psicossociais nele adquiridos.

Association of Age at Menarche with General and Abdominal Obesity in Young Women

Background and Objectives: Age at menarche is related to various biological and socioeconomic factors in childhood. The aim of the study was to examine the association of age at menarche with general and abdominal obesity in young women. Materials and Methods: A transversal anthropometric survey was conducted with 102 females from 21 to 25 years of age. The surveyed traits included height, weight, waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC). General obesity was assessed using the body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity by WC, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). A retrospective method was used for collecting age at menarche data. Results: The average age at menarche is 12.80 years. Early menarcheal age (<12 years) is detected in 25.5% of young females, while late onset of menarche (>14 years) is recorded for 20.6% of subjects. Early menarche age subjects exhibit significantly higher BMI, WC and WHtR in comparison with their late menarche age peers. There is a significant negative correlation between BMI, WC and WHtR values and menarcheal age. Late age at menarche is associated with higher probability of underweight status (BMI < 18.5 and/or WHtR < 0.4). Conclusions: Age at menarche has a negative correlation with general and abdominal obesity. Young women with early age at menarche show statistically higher values of BMI, WC and WHtR, while those with late menarcheal age show greater susceptibility to becoming underweight.
