Overweight and obesity in Portugal: national prevalence in 2003–2005

Abstract: SummaryObesity is an endemic health problem in most developed countries, requiring serious public health attention. The first Portuguese nationwide representative survey about obesity (with objective anthropometric measurement) was undertaken from 1995 to 1998. This paper presents data coming from the second and most recent nationwide representative study of obesity, with objective measurement of weight, height, waist and hip circumferences. Data were collected between January 2003 and January 2005. The survey… Show more

“…We propose that this increase can be related with three main possible reasons that could be acting jointly or individually. On one hand, it could be associated with an increase in the prevalence of obesity in Portugal [15], as obesity is known in the literature as one of the main risk factors for type 2 diabetes [5]. On the other hand, it could also be related with the increasingly pronounced population aging, since the estimates of the DM incidence in this study are higher at older ages and there is evidence that the overall DM increases with age [16].…”

“…Despite considerable investment in research, the prevalence of obesity has not decreased significantly, suggesting the lack of effectiveness of the methods currently used in its treatment and prevention [11]. The need for a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the development of obesity is evident.…”

“…However, these figures are similar to those obtained in 2002 in Portugal. 20 The percentage of overweight or obesity was higher in boys than in girls, as also found in population studies 21 as well as the 4th INS, up to age 25, although the opposite was found over age 55. 19 In the four years between ages 15 and 18 there were no differences in overweight/obesity, since this problem starts earlier, before age 15, as can be seen in the COSI study.…”
