Ovine-Based Collagen Matrix Dressing: Next-Generation Collagen Dressing for Wound Care

Abstract: Significance: Broad-spectrum metalloproteinase (MMP) reduction along with inherent aspects of an extracellular matrix (ECM) dressing can bring about improved wound healing outcomes and shorter treatment duration. Initial reports of clinical effectiveness of a new ovine-based collagen extracellular matrix (CECM) dressing demonstrate benefits in chronic wound healing. Recent Advances: CECM dressings are processed differently than oxidized regenerated cellulose/collagen dressings. CECM dressings consist primarily… Show more

“…The components of the dressing can be directly degraded by MMPs, thereby reducing the consumption of Col in the ECM. The 3D structure provided can provide space for vascular regeneration and keratinocyte migration, effectively promoting wound repair (Liden and May, 2013;Bohn et al, 2016).…”

“…Treatment with PDRN increases the collagen portion in wounded skin. The normal wound healing process primarily progresses based on the balance between collagen synthesis and collagen catabolism by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and the adult wound bed predominantly contains type I collagen deposition during ECM remodeling (22). To determine whether classic PDRN affected collagen fiber accumulation, Masson's Trichrome staining was examined to analyze collagen composition.…”

“…At present, wound healing is one of the common health issues, where it was estimated that chronic nonhealing wounds impact around $8.2 billion (15%) of Medicare beneficiaries. Consequently, it was also conservatively estimated that around $31.7 billion to $96.8 billion were spent annually for primary and secondary diagnosis of the wounds [17].…”

“…Wound dressings and their application in the types of wound are discussed in Table 2. belongs to the bioactive wound dressings which are made up of collagen obtained from various sources such as bovine, porcine, marine, avian, chicken, equine and many more [1,17,18]. They are commonly available in the form of particles, astes, gels, pads, ropes, sheets or solutions.…”
