Oxaliplatin-induced cardiotoxicity in mice is connected to the changes in energy metabolism in the heart tissue

Abstract: Oxaliplatin is a platinum-based alkylating chemotherapeutic agent used for cancer treatment. At high cumulative dosage, the negative effect of oxaliplatin on the heart becomes evident and is linked to a growing number of clinical reports. The aim of this study was to determine how chronic oxaliplatin treatment causes the changes in energy-related metabolic activity in the heart that leads to cardiotoxicity and heart damage in mice. C57BL/6 male mice were treated with a human equivalent dosage of intraperitonea… Show more

“…Neuronal cultures also have limited lifespans, restricting the length of time over which experiments can be conducted, which may not be representative of chronic conditions like CIPN. Animal models, such as based on wild type mice treated with chemotherapy drugs introduce a host of systemic variables such as metabolic changes (20), immune responses, and changes in the blood composition, which can confound results and make it challenging to isolate the specific impacts of a drug on CIPN. In addition, live animal models have low throughput and require a lengthy period to develop chronic CIPN.…”
