“…Among food additives approved for human use, azo compounds are negatively charged at physiological pH and are widely used as food colorants in a large variety of foodstuff and pharmaceuticals (Saleh et al ., 2016). They are characterized by aromatic rings in conjunction with N = N linkages and several are known to interact with biomacromolecules (Basu and Kumar, 2015; Basu and Suresh Kumar, 2017; Al-Shabib et al ., 2018).…”

“…To select an additional test compound for comparison, we checked the general physicochemical properties of all dyes, such as charge, the structural distribution of hydrophobic and polar regions, and the nature of the functional groups present. According to these, AmTH showed the closest resemblance to TZ in terms of the above chemical parameters, both having three negative charges in physiological conditions (Saleh et al ., 2016), and thus AmTH was also selected for further studies. Notably, the highest toxicity was detected when DHVAR4 was mixed with TZ.…”

“…(trisodium 1-(4-sulfonatophenyl)-4-(4sulfonatophenylazo)-5-pyrazolone-3-carboxylate)) is a yellow-colored synthetic azo dye that is used for food or drinks coloring. Tartrazine has two sulfonic acid and one carboxylic acid group on its structure, so it can change molecular form with pH change (Saleh et al 2016). Diphenylcarbazone (1-anilino-3-phenyliminourea) is a molecule from the carbazone family.…”

“…Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop effective methods to detect tartrazine. Among the developed methods, UV-Vis spectroscopy [8][9][10][11] has poor sensitivity and rather high determination limit. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [12][13][14] shows good sensitivity but is time-consuming.…”
