Oxidative Modifications of Rat Liver Cell Components DuringFasciola hepaticaInfection

Abstract: The aim of this paper was to assess the influence of Fasciola hepatica infection on oxidative modifications of rat liver cell components such as proteins and lipids. Wistar rats were infected per os with 30 metacercariae of F. hepatica. Activities and concentrations of liver damage markers were determined in the 4th, 7th, and 10th week postinfection (wpi). A decrease in antioxidant capacity of the host liver, manifested by a decrease in total antioxidant status (TAS), was observed. Diminution of antioxidant ab… Show more

“…These pathological processes can be simultaneously observed in some diseases, such as diabetes, cadmium poisoning, and neurodegenerative diseases (24,30,45). Additionally, there is growing evidence that oxidative stress plays an important role in infection-induced apoptosis (11,31,41).…”

“…Beside dismutation, the Cu/Zn SOD izoenzyme catalyzes surrogate reactions, such as the production of hydroxyl radicals, using anionic scavengers and hydrogen peroxide [41]. The very reactive hydroxyl radicals react rapidly with a wide range of biological macromolecules, causing oxidative damage [42] and a decrease in activity/level of basic cellular enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants [43]. Recent studies proved that in CCl 4 exposed mice the level of SOD, CAT and GPX mRNAs decreased significantly [44].…”

“…Glaucomatous eyes are often characterized with a high level of oxidative stress that can lead to cell death 9 10 . Given that GNGA materials exhibit excellent free radical scavenging abilities due to grafting of GA molecules, in vitro oxidative challenges are employed to evaluate their antioxidant capacities.…”
