Abstract: Background: Red blood cells go through a number of metabolic changes throughout the course of a 0-35 day storage period at 1 to 6oC. The sodium/potassium pump is immobilized, resulting in a drop in intracellular potassium with an increase in cytoplasmic sodium levels, a fall in glucose levels, acidosis as a result of low pH levels, and other alterations known as "storage lesions" during the storage phase.
