Oxidative Stress and Preeclampsia

Abstract: Eclampsia is one of the most common pregnancy complications causing high mortality and morbidity for both mother and foetus. Low birth weight and pre-maturity are very common features. Pre-eclampsia is associated with oxidative stress in the maternal circulation. The etiology and pathogenesis of the pregnancy syndrome preeclampsia remain poorly understood. There is substantial evidence to suggest that the diverse manifestations of preeclampsia, including altered vascular reactivity, vasospasm, and discrete pat… Show more

“…Exposure to air polluted by fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) [ 26 , 27 ], ozone (O 3 ), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) [ 29 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ] can trigger inflammatory reactions, increase blood coagulation, and decrease placental circulation. Consequently, these toxicants can lead to HDP [ 30 , 37 ], though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear [ 29 , 35 ]. Further evidence indicates that MTHFR C677T polymorphism, CT or TT genotypes, and exposure to air pollution may significantly increase the risk of CVD across the lifespan [ 38 ].…”

“…This rise in oxidant stress is compensated by a gradual increase in total antioxidant capacity (Vitamins C and E) during pregnancy, leading to an oxidative balance which might not happen in hypertensive pregnancy. 5 In normal pregnancies, there is remodeling at the placental vascular bed, where cytotrophoblast invades the maternal spiral arteries and makes them lose their smooth muscle to become sinusoids. These vessels have greater diameter and lower resistance.…”

“…Early‐onset pre‐eclampsia (EOPET) is a common obstetrical complication in developed countries and remains a leading cause of maternal death . It is the major cause of poor placentation, resulting in inflammatory and hypoxic damage to surrounding tissue as well as transmission of essential materials from mother to fetus . However, the molecular mechanisms of EOPET pathogenesis are poorly understood.…”
