Oxidative Stress Markers Are Associated with Persistent Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract: Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been associated with myocardial oxidative stress, and antioxidant agents have demonstrated antiarrhythmic benefit in humans. We compared serum markers of oxidation and associated inflammation in individuals with or without AF. Methods: Serum markers of oxidative stress and inflammation were compared in a cross-sectional, case-control design study of 40 male individuals, with or without persistent or permanent AF, who were matched for age, sex, diabetes, and smoking stat… Show more

“…Oxidized plasma GSH/GSSG redox state has also been associated with Type 2 diabetes (151) and increased carotid intima media thickness, an early risk factor for cardiovascular disease (11). Other in vivo studies show that an oxidized Cys/CySS redox state is associated with increased persistent atrial fibrillation (132) and with myocardial perfusion defects (2). Together, with in vitro mechanistic studies, these clinical studies indicate that redox-dependent changes in peroxide are likely to be important components of CVD risk.…”

“…In the context of cardiac disease, ample evidence exists for the existence of a pathogenic link between enhanced ROS production, mitochondrial dysfunction and the development of heart failure (Martin-Fernandez and Gredilla 2016). In addition, serum markers of oxidative stress have been found to be increased in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (Neuman et al 2007). …”

“…For example, the cloning of mammalian Trx2 occurred as late as 1997 [127], providing new insight in the compartmentalization of the Trx2 in mitochondria (mitochondria, Figure 5 right). Similarly, the Cys/CySS couple in the plasma has only slowly surfaced as a significant independent player in protein thiol oxidation, with relevance to clinical conditions such as cardiovascular disease [58,59,82,128] and alcoholic lung disease [129]. Furthermore, identification of novel protein targets that are regulated by redox state has been increasing as redox proteomic techniques improve [130][131][132].…”
