“…The point at which oxygen consumption ceases to be oxygen-independent and becomes oxygen-dependent is known as critical oxygen tension P,; this varies between species or individuals with temperature and/or salinity (e, g. Bayne, 1971;Newel1 et al, 1977;Hawkins and Ultsch, 1979;Shumway, 1981;Shumway and Marsden, 1982), body size (e. g. Bayne, 1971Bayne, , 1973Taylor and Brand, 1975b;Shumway, 1981), ventilation rate (Bayne, 197 1, 1973), likelihood of experiencing hypoxia (Bayne, 1973;Murdoch and Shumway, 1980) and 'degree of openness' (Famme, 1980). With the exception of Taylor and Brand (1975a, b), Bayne (1971Bayne ( , 1973 and Famme (1980) all of the above studies were carried out with gastropods.…”

“…The method used to measure oxygen uptake in water confined the animals in a closed system for 6 h which would have reduced the oxygen tension of the water. However, Murdoch & Shumway (1980) found the oxygen uptake rate of Chiton pelliserpentis to be independent of oxygen tension down to a level of 30% of oxygen saturation, and as the minimum level of oxygen saturation in this study dropped to only 60% it is unlikely that any chitons became hypoxic.…”

“…Although the study by Murdoch & Shumway (1980) of chitons from the Otago Harbour, New Zealand, indicated that the ratio of aquatic to aerial respiration values for each species was dependent on percentage exposure, other studies of chitons do not wholly support this hypothesis. Kincannon (1975) found no significant difference between aquatic oxygen uptake of subtidal and intertidal Tonicella lineata.…”

“…Several intertidal invertebrates have the ability to maintain aerobic metabolism in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, e.g., decapods (Taylor & Butler 1978, Hawkins et al 1982, Houlihan & Innes 1984, gastropods (McMahon & Russell-Hunter 1977, Houlihan 1979, Shumway 1981 (Murdoch & Shumway 1980) (for reVIew see Newell 1979). In contrast sessile suspension-feeding intertidal invertebrate; such a~ balanomorph barnacles (Grainer & Newell 1965) an?…”
