Oxygen Reduction at Silver and Silver-Based Alloy Electrodes

Abstract: Current‐voltage characteristics for the reduction of oxygen at silver and alloy electrodes formed with silver and elements having oxides of low electron affinity were studied in pre‐electrolyzed and in ordinary 15% KOH solution. In impure solutions or at the alloy electrodes straight Tafel lines were obtained, but with pure silver in pure solutions no such behavior was found. This is taken to indicate a dynamic surface of varying catalytic activity. With silver‐magnesium oxide surfaces, a potential about 100… Show more

“…Alloying of Mg with silver has been reported to improve the ORR activity. 173,174 Porous electrodes of Ag-Mg alloys in atomic ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1 were synthesized. Alloy with Ag:Mg ratio of 3:1 showed the highest current density i.e.…”

“…Although Pt-based film catalyst has already obtained progress via PLD method [ 15 ], it is still expected to further decrease the cost of ORR catalyst. Therefore, the 3d transition metal oxides [ 16 - 19 ], silver [ 20 - 27 ], and its related alloy with transition metals, such as Ag-Co and Ag-Mn [ 28 - 31 ], which consume less cost than Pt were investigated extensively in an alkaline environment. Beyond that, Ag-Cu alloyed materials also might be suitable electrocatalyst for reasons.…”
