“…This success rate is over twice that reported commonly in the pediatric literature (36) and likely results, in part, from the very rapid VO 2 kinetics in this population that enables VO 2 max to be achieved within one min during "supramaximal" exercise ( Figure 1, upper right panel). With sufficiently motivated children, a second square-wave test performed in the residual 25% may increase this success rate further.…”

“…However, until rigorous protocols are developed to determine VO 2 max unambiguously in prepubertal children this issue remains undetermined. This situation give rise to speculation, for example, that children are less able to demonstrate a VO 2 plateau at VO 2 max because their inferior anaerobic capacity limits exercise tolerance (which is low compared with adults; 18) or that the VO 2 plateau may not indicate "the limits of cardiovascular function" in this population (36). In contrast, the present investigation demonstrates that, using a simple two-test protocol, a plateau of VO 2 against work rate can be achieved in 75% of instances across a broad range of aerobic capacities.…”

“…Alguns autores sugerem a utilização do valor de platô de VO 2 para considerar o valor de VO 2max , porém, recentes investigações têm observado a dificuldade de ocorrer esse fenômeno em crianças (23)(24) , sedentários (25) e indivíduos com doenças (26) . Alguns autores têm utilizado o valor médio dos três maiores valores seguidos como VO 2max de cada indivíduo (11) .…”

“…The most highly contested of these criteria is the V O 2 plateau, first described by Hill and Lupton (1923). Since many subjects do not exhibit a plateau (Åstrand, 1952;Cumming & Borysyk, 1972;Cumming & Friesen, 1967;Cunningham et al, 1977;Freedson et al, 1986;Myers et al, 1989;Noakes, 1988;Rowland & Cunningham, 1992), it has been argued that meeting this criterion is not necessary for a true V O 2 max (Rowland & Cunningham, 1992). The use of a single number as a cut-off value has also been questioned .…”
