Oxygen vacancy-mediated WO3 phase junction to steering photogenerated charge separation for enhanced water splitting

Abstract: Effective charge separation and transfer is deemed to be the contributing factor to achieve high photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance on photoelectrodes. Building a phase junction structure with controllable phase transition of WO3 can further improve the photocatalytic performance. In this work, we realized the transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic by regulating the annealing temperatures, and constructed an orthorhombic-monoclinic WO3 (o-WO3/m-WO3) phase junction. The formation of oxyg… Show more

“…Hence, the appearance of O 1s from OH − can indicate the presence of V O in the structure. 32,33 As shown in Table 1, a change in molar ratio of W 5+ /W 6+ after introducing different doping elements are observed. This suggests that the dopants substitute the tungsten ions or form intercalated or intermixed structures within the lattice, causing lattice distortions and creating new localized electronic states within the WO x structure.…”

“…46 Therefore, a series of relevant spectroscopic and photoelectrochemical characterizations were carried out to reveal the behavior of photogenerated charge carriers. 47 The steady-state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is an effective means to reflect the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. 48 As displayed in Fig.…”

“…1 The development and use of new energy has become a research hotspot in the scientific community around the world. 2 With the advantages of high electronic conductivity, large specific surface area, good mechanical stability and tunable surface functional groups, MXene materials show great potential in energy storage devices. 3 MXene materials are two-dimensional layered transition metal carbon nitrides, which are exfoliated from the MAX material by liquid phase chemical etching using a three-dimensional bulk MAX phase material as a precursor, 4 and the surface chemical environment of the MXene material determines its properties.…”
