P‐89: Development of Waveguide Liquid Crystal Display for Transparent Display Applications

Abstract: Waveguide liquid crystal display (WLCD) is a newly developed transparent display technology. Since polarizers and color filters are not necessary for the WLCD, high transparency is easily reached. Meanwhile, owing to the fast response time, field sequential color (FSC) can be applied to realize full color display. In this work, by optimizing materials and process conditions, we obtained lower driving voltage and higher contrast ratio than previously reported. These enhanced characteristics provide the possibil… Show more

“…In recent years, to meet the market requirement for transparent display, some new transparent displays emerged out, such as Micro/Mini LED display, scattering type PSLC display, etc. [5][6][7][8] In this work, the PSLC transparent display which is called waveguide liquid crystal display (WLCD) [6][7][8] will be investigated. With the WLCD technology, the device does not need polarizers and color filters, and can realize full color display through field sequential color technology.…”

“…In previous papers [17][18][19][20], we reported the light waveguide LCD which is enabled by light scattering of polymer stabilized LC. When no voltage is applied, the LC is uniformly oriented and exhibits no scattering, the incident light does not come out of the viewing side of the display.…”

“…For example, we consider the waveguide display based on PSLC. [36][37][38] The PSLC is sandwiched between two parallel substrates (either glass plate or plastic lm) with transparent electrode. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are installed on the edge of the display.…”

“…In our previous report, the randomness of the liquid crystal is achieved by using the polymer network. 38,41 In this paper, we report two new methods that can enhance the performance of the light waveguide display. The rst method is to use patterned electrode.…”
