P-FAB: A Fiber-Optic Biosensor Device for Rapid Detection of COVID-19

Abstract: Rapid and low-cost diagnosis of COVID-19 is essential to identify the infected subjects, particularly the asymptomatic cases, primarily to arrest the spread of the disease through local transmission. Antibody-based chromatographic serological tests, as an alternative to RT-PCR, offer only limited help due to high false positives. We propose to exploit our field-deployable/ portable plasmonic fiber-optic absorbance biosensor (P-FAB) platform for one-step, wash-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus particles direct… Show more

“…This biofunctionalized system are used to detect COVID-19 by applying saliva samples. The device is named as Fiber -Optic Biosensor device and works on the principle of monitoring an optical power loss in light ( Murugan et al., 2020 ). Another setting of biosensor development for COVID-19 as highlighted by Pooja Nag et al.…”

“…Researchers from RUCDR Infinite Biologics at Rutgers University have successfully validated saliva as being a viable biosample source for COVID-19 detection when compared to nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs [206]. Very recently, Murugan et al [207] proposed to exploit a field-deployable/portable plasmonic fiber-optic absorbance biosensor (P-FAB) platform for one-step, wash-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus particles directly in saliva sample with minimal sample pre-processing. Further studies are required but salivary diagnostics may play a crucial role in the detection of COVID-19 and can offer a mass screening of the population and more importantly it can eliminate the requirement of health care professionals to collect samples and risking infections.…”

“…Showed a study Suggested to take advantage of the portable fiber-optic platform (P-FAB) to detect COVID-19. the challenges were that this method needs to refine certain parameters, followed by analytical validation and model scale-up, which can take about nine months [41]. Improved optical biosensor for Localized Surface Plasmon Coupled Fluorescence (LSPCF), detection of SARS-CoV.…”
