Abstract:Introduction: Patients who present to the Emergency Department (ED) with a drug overdose often require long periods of monitoring. After their initial assessment and stabilization, they spend a significant amount of time in a high cost acute care bed in the ED for monitoring until they are medically cleared for psychiatric care or to be discharged.
