“…Moreover, p75NTR is weakly expressed in the epithelioid melanomas, while it is highly expressed in desmoplastic and spindle cell melanomas (Iwamoto et al, 1996). This was confirmed by others who showed p75NTR staining to be more diffuse and intense as compared with S100 (Kanik et al, 1996;Lazova et al, 2010). On the contrary, Huttenbach and co-workers detected p75NTR positive cells only in 33% of desmoplastic melanomas (Huttenbach et al, 2002).…”

“…p75NTR is a transmembrane protein that binds nerve growth factor, and has been used as a marker of neural crest origin. 30 Bonetti et al 15 reported lack of p75NTR expression in non-neoplastic tissues and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors compared with the increased expression observed in schwannomas. Other groups reported high rates of expression in both schwannomas and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors in addition to numerous other tumors, including synovial sarcomas and rhabdomyosarcomas.…”

“…53 Interestingly, p75 NTR is highly expressed in desmoplastic melanomas and spindle cell melanomas and weakly expressed in the epithelioid melanomas. 54 In a study by Huttenbach et al only 33% of their desmoplastic melanomas stained positive with p75 NTR , 55 while more recently Lazova 56 showed p75 NTR staining to be more diffuse and intense as compared with S100, as reported previously by Kanik et al…”
