Pacemaker surgical site infection caused by Mycobacterium goodii

Abstract: We describe what we believe to be the first documented case of Mycobacterium goodii infection in Europe. It is also the second documented report of a pacemaker pocket surgical site infection caused by M. goodii. Although rarely involved in such infections, rapidly growing mycobacteria should be recognized during conventional bacteriological investigations and further identified by molecular tools to provide adequate therapy. In the present case, antimicrobial therapy with doxycycline without removal of the pac… Show more

“…Another case reported by Marchandin et al 3 documents successful treatment without the removal of pacemaker but with combination of intravenous ofloxacin and oral doxycycline for 6 months. Here, we document successful treatment with 6 months of therapy with oral ciprofloxacin and doxycycline and removal of the infected device.…”

“…The infection occurred between 8 days and 20 years from the last device related procedure. It occurred with both transvenous [17, 18, 20–22, 2427, 30, 31, 33–39] and epicardial device implantations [19, 23, 28, 29, 32]. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was reported in seven cases [18, 23, 28, 31, 36] with mostly pocket infection.…”

“…Mycobacterium abscessus was reported in two cases [19, 33] with pocket infection. Mycobacterium goodii was reported in two cases [25, 29] with pocket infection plus bacteremia in the first case. Mycobacterium avium complex [17], and M. avium intracellulare complex [32] in one case causing epicardial PM and ICD pocket infection respectively.…”
