To determine the individual tactics employed by elite modern pentathletes within each discipline of the new combined running-shooting event, and the consequences of these strategies on the overall performance. 36 male pentathletes competing in a world cup event, where running velocity, transition time, shooting time, shooting accuracy and delay per shot were measured. Performances of the top third pentathletes (TOP), the middle third pentathletes (MIDDLE) and the bottom third pentathletes in the combined event (BOTTOM) were compared. The difference in overall performance between TOP and MIDDLE/BOTTOM was predominately associated with a better shooting accuracy (79 ± 13%, 68 ± 12% and 64 ± 10% success rate, for TOP, MIDDLE, BOTTOM, respectively) and a quicker shooting time (86 ± 16s, 109 ± 19s and 117 ± 23s, for the TOP, MIDDLE, BOTTOM, respectively). No significant difference was observed on running velocity, transition time and delay per shot among the three groups. All the competitors started significantly faster over the first 200 m of each of the three 1 km running stages. The last third of the approximately 3km race was completed significantly faster by all pentathletes (p < 0.05). The main finding was that the best performers of the combined event distinguished themselves due to their greater shooting accuracy.

Swimming, cycling, running and total time performances of the top five males between 20 and 70 years of age (in 5-year intervals) were analyzed for short distance road-based (1.5 km swim, 40 km cycle, and 10 km run) and off-road (1.5 km swim, 30 km mountain bike, and 11 km trail run) triathlons at the 2009 World Championships. Independently of age, there was a lesser age-related decline in cycling performance (P inf 0.01) compared to running and swimming for road-based triathlon. In contrast, age-related decline did not differ between the three locomotion modes for off-road triathlon. With advancing age, the performance decline was less pronounced (P inf 0.01) for road-based than for off-road triathlon in swimming (a parts per thousand yen65 years), cycling (a parts per thousand yen50 years), running (a parts per thousand yen60 years), and total event (a parts per thousand yen55 years) times, respectively. These results suggest that the rate of the decline in performance for off-road triathlon is greater than for road-based triathlon, indicating that the type of discipline (road vs. mountain bike cycling and road vs. trail running) exerts an important influence on the magnitude of the age-associated changes in triathlon performance

Talent Selection allows to optimize the resources available for sporting talent in order to design the best strategy to achieve top level sporting results. Because of the unknown aspects of the performance model in Olympic triathlon the TS variables and their relationship with a future performance are far-off from being identified in order to make a talent prospective study possible. Currently most triathlon federations evaluate only the juvenile performance expressed in time trials test on swimming and running. The aim of the present study was to find the most appropriate variables for the Talent Selection in Olympic Triathlon, verifying those widely used by means of a retrospective research about particular juvenile features recognized in top world triathlon athletes. The variables are considered as input variables of a Talent selection model based on Fuzzy Logic that overcome the limits of traditional models based on cut-off selection. The present findings indicate that the exclusive evaluation of juvenile running and swimming performance in order to select triathlon talent is not appropriate. Diagnosis criteria should include several other variables that should also take into account mental ability, speed of abilities development, utilization of endogenous and exogenous resources, load and stress tolerance as several leading countries have done recently.
