Paints and Coatings

Abstract: Coatings are multi-component systems and surfaces/interfaces have a strong influence on their quality and play also an important role during paint application. Coating additives are used since many years successfully as "problem solvers" in coating formulations to overcome defects and in general to improve the overall quality. Many coating defects are closely connected with interfacial phenomena and therefore it is no surprise that oftentimes coating additives are surface active materials. Examples of typical … Show more

“…Many VOS are used in industrial processes such as reactions, extractions, and separations. 1–5 However, the problems of VOS related to health, safety, and the environment 6–13 are driving the search for viable alternatives. 14,15 The call for change is coming from environmental groups, researchers, industry, and regulatory agencies that are creating strict regulations governing or even banning the use of certain solvents.…”

“…The type of metal substrate, the expected working environment and the other operational, economical and aesthetical requirements determine the selection of the organic coating formulation, application method and thickness. For some applications, such as white goods, food and drink cans, sport equipment, etc.., organic coatings are formulated to provide a pleasant aesthetical appearance to the object, together with some level of corrosion protection [16]. For other applications, such as civil infrastructures, automotive, aerospace or marine applications, the specific organic coatings are formulated to protect the metal surface from a relatively harsh environment [79].…”
