Parabolic Trough Collector Cost Update for the System Advisor Model (SAM)

Abstract: This report updates the baseline cost for parabolic trough solar fields in the United States within NREL's System Advisor Model (SAM). SAM, which is available at no cost at https://sam.nrel.gov/, is a performance and financial model designed to facilitate decision making for people involved in the renewable energy industry. SAM is the primary tool used by NREL and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for estimating the performance and cost of concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies and projects. The resear… Show more

“…NREL recently estimated the installed cost of a representative CSP parabolic trough plant in Arizona, with a 100-MWe solar field (large enough to accommodate 6 h of molten salt TES), parabolic troughs, and synthetic HTF (Kurup and Turchi 2015a). This study updated earlier cost benchmarking (Turchi 2010).…”

“…The cost is estimated for the installed hybrid solar system per unit of parabolic trough aperture area ($/m 2 ) using a bottom-up approach as $283 /m 2 as shown in Table 5 including all solar field materials, labor installation, and assembly. Our analysis is based on the baseline cost for parabolic trough solar fields in the United States within U.S Department of Energy NREL's System Advisor Model (SAM) [43], [44]. The cost of GaAs single junction cells with 29% efficiency is based on NREL's long-term estimation [45].…”
