Parametric Finite Element Model and Mechanical Characterisation of Electrospun Materials for Biomedical Applications

Abstract: Electrospun materials, due to their unique properties, have found many applications in the biomedical field. Exploiting their porous nanofibrous structure, they are often used as scaffolds in tissue engineering which closely resemble a native cellular environment. The structural and mechanical properties of the substrates need to be carefully optimised to mimic cues used by the extracellular matrix to guide cells’ behaviour and improve existing scaffolds. Optimisation of these parameters is enabled by using th… Show more

“…Electrospinning is the most popular method because of its easiness and affordability among the different techniques available for casting nanofiber scaffolds. It allows for the production of nanofibers made from complex components and for various applications [ 2 , [4] , [5] , [6] , [7] , [8] , [9] , [10] , [11] ].…”

“…The skin scaffolds must have mechanical properties comparable to the native tissue [ 11 ]. The Young's modulus indicates the stress level required to deform the material.…”

“…These approaches cover various electrospinning scenarios, including centrifugal electrospinning [ 26 ], morphology simulations [ 27 ], and fiber diameter simulations [ 25 ] in numerical environments. Furthermore, the finite element method (FEM) has been used for field calculations [ 28 ] and for the calculation of the mechanical properties of the resulting fibers [ 29 , 30 ]. However, the simulation of the actual fiber formation by FEM is not covered in the literature.…”
