PARASITOIDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE LARGE ASPEN TORTRIX, CHORISTONEURA CONFLICTANA (LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE), IN INTERIOR ALASKA

Abstract: Can. Ent. 106: 1241-1246 (1974) A procedure is described for evaluating commercial residual pesticides commonly used for house fly control. Blotting paper panels were treated with candidate products and aged up to 5 weeks. During aging, these panels were tested thrice at 1 , 3, and 5 weeks after their treatment for efficacy based on mortality of female house flies exposed to them for 24 h in a cage. A product is reported satisfactory if the -average percentage kill obtained is not less than 80, 60, and 50 at 1… Show more

“…Two specimens of a second species of Glypta, G. erratica Cresson, were reared in two orchards in 2001 (one from P. limitata and one from an unidentified leafroller larva). Glypta erratica is a widespread species (Alaska to Oregon and Newfoundland to North Carolina) (Dasch 1988) and has been previously reared from several species of leafrollers and budworms in the genera Pandemis Hü bner (Dasch 1988) and Choristoneura Lederer, including C. conflictana in Alaska (Torgersen & Beckwith 1974), C. pinus Freeman in Michigan (Allen et al 1969) and C. rosaceana in Nova Scotia and Ontario (Dasch 1988). Dasch (1988) also recorded G. erratica as reared from P. limitata in British Columbia as well as from Pandemis canadana Kearfott in Alberta, so our rearing of G. erratica from P. limitata in the Okanagan is not unexpected.…”

“…However, our results may be the first to demonstrate these effects on such a broad scale in interior Alaska. It is also worth noting that our aspen tree‐ring chronology revealed a large growth reduction in 1966–1969, which may have been driven by a major outbreak of the large aspen tortrix ( Choristoneura conflictana Wlkr), a defoliator that affected approximately 2.5 million hectares in interior Alaska in the late 1960s (Torgersen and Beckwith ).…”
